Surface-water Modeling System (SMS)

Surface-water Modeling System (SMS) logo
Description

The Surface-water Modeling System (SMS), developed by Aquaveo, LLC, gives users access to a full range of coastal and riverine solutions.  It provides a graphical user interface to many models and codes developed and used at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), including ADCIRC, AdH, CMS, STWAVE, and more.

SMS includes flexible modeling approaches such that users can build a conceptual model to define bathymetry/topology along with engineering features using GIS objects and then build grids and meshes utilizing specific features within SMS. SMS allows for data import and export in many different formats to make transferring information easier.   SMS is useful for evaluating engineering design and impacts to navigation, flooding, salinity transport, particle tracking, and sedimentation, including Engineering with Nature (EWN), natural and nature-based features, in both coastal and riverine environments.

SMS can be utilized on PC and will soon be available on ERDC high performance computers (HPC).

Key features of SMS:

  • Structured and unstructured meshing capability
  • Several different meshing options to include various design features
  • Interface to define input and visualize output for several different models
    • ADCIRC
    • AdH
    • STWAVE
    • CMS
    • BOUSS2D
    • PTM
    • SRH-2D
    • TUFLOW
  • Plotting and video generation options
  • Data manipulation and computation options

Software

Aquaveo, LLC. provides a community version of SMS at no charge. This version does not include all model interfaces that are available within SMS.  Access to specific models may require a paid license.  SMS licenses for all CHL supported models are free to USACE.

The SMS source code is maintained within a version control repository on AquaveoGitLab and is account access restricted by Aquaveo, LLC.

For USACE users, SMS is available from the ACE-IT App Portal.  SMS is also available for download from https://www.aquaveo.com/software/sms-surface-water-modeling-system-introduction .

Documentation

The SMS Learning Center Website:  https://aquaveo.com/software/sms-learning has information on how to use SMS including access to tutorials, videos, wiki and SMS blog.

Community Test Cases

The SMS contributors at CHL maintain a suite of test cases to ensure consistency among releases.  These test cases are maintained by the individual model POC.
