LOCKSIM is a tool to use for the preliminary evaluation of the layout of a navigation lock filling and emptying system. The required input for LOCKSIM is information related to the geometry of the filling and emptying system including culvert size, bend information, number of ports, chamber size, etc. LOCKSIM provides estimates for lock filing and emptying times and discharge using one-dimensional flow equations. Initial estimates of Hawser forces can also be calculated. LOCKSIM can be used to evaluate many proposed configurations for a navigation lock filling and emptying system before more detailed performance information is sought from computational fluid dynamics and physical modeling efforts are conducted.

LOCKSIM is not meant to replace computational fluid dynamics or physical model evaluations of navigation lock filling and emptying system design analysis. LOCKSIM should be used as the first-pass tool used to evaluate the layout of a navigation lock filling and emptying system.
